The short answer

What is guided implant surgery?

Guided implant surgery uses dynamic 3D navigation for dental implant placement. Your implants are first planned on cone beam 3D images of your jaw. Then, during surgery, the navigation gives a live video overlay of your jaw, bone and teeth, and the drilling tools in relation to them.

It shows the exact angle, depth and placement in real time, so each implant can be placed with high accuracy.

Step by step

How guided implant surgery works

01

Cone beam 3D scan

A 3D view of your jawbone, nerves and sinuses.

02

Digital plan

Each implant's position, angle and depth is planned on the scan.

03

Real-time navigation

A live video overlay tracks the drilling tools against your jaw, bone and teeth as each implant goes in.

04

Your new teeth

After healing, your crown, bridge or full arch goes on.

Guided vs freehand

What real-time navigation changes

Implants have long been planned on cone beam 3D images and then placed by hand to that plan. That almost always works well. But as with any surgery, the actual placement can vary a little from the plan. Navigation gives real-time feedback during surgery, for even better accuracy.

  • A live video overlay shows your jaw, bone and teeth, and the drilling tools in relation to them.
  • Exact angle, depth and placement are shown in real time, through every step of the surgery.
  • Nerves and sinuses are mapped first, so the plan keeps a safe distance from them.
  • Planned for your new teeth: each implant is placed where your crown, bridge or full arch will look and work best.

Benefits

Why patients benefit

  • High accuracy, with real-time feedback during surgery.
  • A predictable plan you can see before surgery.
  • Efficient surgery, with the decisions made in advance.
  • Works for complex cases, including bone loss.

Who benefits

When guided surgery helps most

Dr. Zatzkin plans and places your implants himself. He's a board-certified periodontist, an honors graduate of NYU College of Dentistry and a 12-time Top Dentist, 2015 through 2026. Real-time navigation matters most when there's little room for error.

  • Several implants or a full arch, where each implant has to line up with the others.
  • Thin or limited bone, or implants near a nerve or the sinus.
  • Front teeth, where the position decides how natural the result looks.
  • Same-day teeth, when the bone allows, with a temporary tooth or arch on the new implants. Teeth in a Day

Recovery

After guided implant surgery

Even recovery can benefit. In some cases, patients who have implants placed with guided implant surgery may have a faster and smoother recovery.

  • The first few days: some swelling and tenderness is normal.
  • Eating: soft foods while the area heals.
  • Healing: the implants fuse with the bone over about 3 to 6 months before your final teeth.
  • Not enough bone? Grafting can come first, also planned on your scan. Bone grafting

Is there a warranty with my dental implants?

What is guided implant surgery?

It's dental implant surgery with dynamic 3D navigation. Your implants are planned on cone beam 3D images, and during surgery the navigation shows the exact angle, depth and placement of each implant in real time.

Is guided implant surgery better than freehand?

Freehand placement follows the plan by hand, and it almost always gives excellent results. Real-time navigation adds live feedback during surgery, so the placement can follow the plan with even greater accuracy, especially in complex cases.

What is dynamic 3D navigation?

It's real-time tracking during implant surgery. Working with your cone beam 3D images, it gives a live video overlay of your jaw, bone and teeth, and the drilling tools in relation to them, so Dr. Zatzkin sees the exact angle, depth and placement as he works.

Does guided implant surgery hurt?

The area is numbed, and dental sedation is available for a comfortable experience. Some swelling and tenderness afterward is normal, and in some cases guided surgery may help a faster, smoother recovery.

Who is a candidate for guided implant surgery?

Most implant patients. It helps most with several implants or a full arch, thin bone, implants near a nerve or the sinus, and front teeth.

How much does guided implant surgery cost?

Dr. Zatzkin places your implants with real-time 3D navigation. Your cost depends on how many implants you need and whether bone grafting is needed, and you get the exact cost at your consultation. 0% APR financing with Cherry is available for qualified applicants.

Is 3D navigation a newer way to place dental implants?

Yes. Implants used to be planned on cone beam 3D images and then placed by hand to that plan. Dynamic 3D navigation adds real-time feedback during surgery, showing the exact angle, depth and placement of each implant as it goes in. It doesn't replace the 3D images; it works together with them.
