At Premier Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, we offer dental implants as one of the top solutions for replacing missing or damaged teeth. The implants, which use durable and natural-looking artificial teeth offer a lasting solution for many dental issues. However, the implant placement process can be long, often taking several months for some people. As a result, during this waiting period, you have to suffer through a reduced oral functionality, and sometimes, a less-than-perfect smile. Fortunately, there is a solution for the patient who would like to enjoy the benefits of dental implants without having to wait for several months – immediate dental implants

What Are Immediate Dental Implants?

Immediate dental implants, also known as same-day implants or immediate loading implants – are dental implants that are offered in a single day, thus providing an instant replacement for your missing teeth. They are usually offered on the same day as your teeth are extracted, thus saving you the trouble of having to wait for several weeks or months before getting the implants.

Who Can Get Immediate Dental Implants?

Immediate dental implants can be offered to anyone with missing teeth, or on the brink of losing their teeth. They can be used as a solution for a single tooth, several teeth, or all missing teeth. However, to get the implants, your jawbone and gums must be healthy and sufficient. Therefore, if your gums and jawbone are damaged, or if there is not enough bone, the immediate implants will not be offered. Instead, other dental treatments will be used to restore the gum and bone structure, after which, the standard implants can be inserted.

You can also fail to get immediate dental implants due to the following reasons

• If there is an infection around the tooth extraction site(s)

• If there are signs of dental health issues - gum disease, cysts, lesions, etc.

• If the jawbone is damaged during the tooth extraction process - can happen during complex extraction

• If the initial stability of the jawbone is not enough to properly support implants - even if you have a healthy jawbone

• Other dental or general health conditions that can affect the implant placement procedure

The Immediate Dental Implant Placement Procedure

Immediate dental implant placement starts with the extraction of the affected teeth. Immediately following the extraction of a tooth, the jawbone is drilled to create a hole for the implant. The implant is then inserted, and the gums surrounding it stitched up to seal the wound. An abutment is then screwed onto the implant, thus allowing for the installation of the dental crown.

Before the surgery, dental x-rays and CT scans are used to assess the condition of the jawbone and plan for the accurate placement of the implants. An impression of your teeth and dental features is also taken, which allows for the custom-creation of the dental crowns – or in the case of implant-supported dentures, the dental bridge.

Caring For Your Immediate Implants

With immediate dental implants, there is no waiting period to allow the tooth extraction sites and implant sites to heal. Proper care is thus needed to ensure that the implants heal properly without any complications. Following the implant placement, you should avoid irritating the surgical site, for example, by excessively brushing or flossing, or by biting and chewing hard foods. Proper oral hygiene is also needed to ensure that the implant sites heal properly without any infection.
